We are a new meetup focused on a series of small talks by and for front end developers in Portland, Oregon.

Breaking the ice at meetups is a challenge, especially when people don't know each other that well. So we're starting a new meetup format.

So what is a "small talk" you ask?

• A small talk is short in length. It is only 7 minutes long, and is only 7 slides.

• A small talk is less formal. It's like a conversation starter.

• Anyone can present a small talk.

We also hope this encourages more front end developers to speak at meetups by lowering the bar a little. You can share a piece of JavaScript code you wrote, a new ReactJS pattern you're using at work, your favorite CSS trick, a piece of software you can't live without in your workflow, how you work with your design team, what your career goals are, how you interview new engineering candidates, your new side project, or anything else you want to share, as long as it somehow relates to your life as a front end web developer.

The format of the 7 slides are as follows:

First Slide

• My name is

• I work at

• You wouldn’t guess it, but I’m actually pretty good at... example: doing back flips

• I've always wanted to... example: sky dive

Next 6 Slides - Your small talk ideas. Pretend you're talking to a friend over a drink. If you have to show code, keep it small.

We then allow up to 5 minutes for Q&A per talk. The goal is to open a conversation and see where it goes.

Please contact me if you are interested in doing a 7 minute Small Talk.

Not ready to talk yet? No worries. Just sign up and attend. Everyone 's welcome.

Join us and let's make some front end small talk.
